Italian Festival Debuts: Tosca and La Traviata

This summer marks two significant Italian debuts for Adam Smith, performing Puccini and Verdi.

On July 18, Adam makes his debut at the 72nd Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, performing one of his signature roles, Cavaradossi in Tosca, under the baton of Carlo Montanaro. The production, directed by Maria Todaro with sets by Carlo Centolavigna, brings Adam to the very place where Puccini lived and composed, which is an especially meaningful milestone for a tenor whose interpretations of the composer’s heroes have earned widespread critical acclaim.

Of Adam’s Cavarodossi, The Guardian wrote: “Smith meanwhile makes a tremendous Cavaradossi, his arias gloriously phrased, his way with words often immaculate, and his high notes thrillingly sustained…”. Meanwhile, Detskuduse praised “his assured rendition of the marvellous aria Lucevan le Stelle, in which the doomed artist bids farewell to life”, noting that it “draws massive applause from the audience”.

The summer concludes with another major milestone as Adam makes his debut at the Arena di Verona debut as Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata on August 22 and 29, stepping onto one of the opera’s most celebrated stages for the first time.
